How many times have you been to an airport and seen a “FREE WIFI” signal come up but have trouble to connect? It happens to us all the time.

Most airports these days, especially large international ones, offer free wifi to passengers. Although many will experience trouble connecting to them or even finding a signal. Some airports require local phone numbers, email address verification, or even a login before getting started.

With all the confusion we wanted to break down the process of how to get connected next time you are at an airport.

Finding Airport Wifi

Most of the time when you go to an airport and look for available connections you will see a version of:

“Free Wifi”

“Airport Name Free Wifi”

Almost all of the time these networks will allow you to connect without a password but that doesn’t mean you won’t need a password to actually get on the internet. Almost all airports lets passengers connect, and while some truly provide free wifi, others present you a range of options once connected.

These can include a free tier or a paid connection for a limited amount of time.

If your airport Wifi appears to need a password once you connect, you are in luck with a number of apps that help you unlock certain airport wifi passwords.

Connecting to Airport WiFi The Official Way

In some airports you will get a notification about the free WiFi as soon as you enter the airport. If not, you can always search for the WiFi list and look for any accessible free airport wi-fi.

Generally, there are three steps that you need to follow to officially connect.

  1. Step 1: Switch on WiFi on your phone.
  2. Step 2: Search from the list and see if there is a secure or public WiFi named after the airport.
  3. Step 3: Connect to it. If it is password-protected, you can either ask the airport authorities or use the app that we mentioned above.
  4. Step 4: Register your mobile number or email address. If there is an option to register a mobile number, then the airport service will send you code to validate that number.
  5. Step 5: Complete the authentication and you should have access to free WiFi for a limited time.

Not all airports give you unlimited access to their free WiFi service. This is also done to ensure that no one can use the network beyond its capacity.

If you are part of the lounge, then you will always get access to WiFi without much struggle. In fact, in some airports, they share a booklet with the method listed on how to get connected to the free airport wi-fi network.

How to locate the login page

It is common to get stuck as you are not able to find the login page. Even the free WiFi access does not work without the login page, even when you can get connected to it.

In that case, we do have some tricks that you can use to get access to the login page.

  • Enter neversecure.com to your browser. Generally, it redirects you to the login page.
  • You can also try to type 8.8.8.8, the Google DNS, into the browser for redirection.

These are worth a try incase you can’t get access to login.

Network limitations

To limit the network, airports generally have a few types of restrictions they put in place.

  • Network speed: There is a limitation on how much speed you will get. For free WiFi, there is a different speed, while for the password-protected one, it could be a bit higher.
  • Time: Some airports limit the WiFi by accessing time, generally a few hours.
  • Data limitation: Another way to limit usage is to put a cap on the amount of data. This will generally be enough for basic browsing but don’t expect to make big downloads at the airport.

So, how do you overcome these limitations? The best way is to log in with a different phone number and information if your first access has been revoked due to you reaching the limit. You can also try to reset your browser to overcome the specific time limitation put by the airports but that won’t always work.

Public Wifi Security

Lastly, it’s important to remember that Public WiFi is not safe. They are many ways bad actors can get access to information that is shared in public WiFi. That’s why you need to be careful about what you do on this network. For example, do not try to login or access websites including bank accounts, credit cards, or investments.

it’s just not worth it.

Summary & Takeaways

Airport wifi is becoming increasingly more common and these days its hard to find an airport without it. We find getting connected is not always the most straightforward but if you know some general hacks you can almost always find a way.
