Seoul’s high-end hotel scene is small and concentrated. Five hotels carry the wealthy-visitor traffic: the Shilla, Four Seasons Seoul, Park Hyatt Seoul, the Plaza, and the Conrad. The crowd is mostly business (the Korean wealth machine runs out of Gangnam) plus regional Asian travelers, family money in town for K-medical and K-beauty appointments, and the slow trickle of Western luxury tourism that has built up since the food scene became internationally famous.
The Shilla is the consensus pick across categories. The Four Seasons Seoul is central, calm, and the easiest answer for first-time visitors. The Park Hyatt sits in Gangnam itself for travelers who want to stay close to the new-money side of the city. The Plaza is across from City Hall in the historic center. The Conrad is on the Han River inside the IFC complex.
The Shilla Seoul
The Shilla is Samsung-owned and the property the Korean wealthy use themselves, which is the strongest signal you can get in a city where most luxury hotels chase the same crowd. Sits on a hillside in Jangchung with a private garden, the kind of setting that feels miles from the city even though it isn’t. Reserve well in advance, since the suite floors book out by quarter.

The easiest answer if you don’t know Seoul. Central enough to walk to Gyeongbokgung Palace, Bukchon Hanok Village, and most of the historic-Seoul attractions. Rooms are spacious and quiet. The lobby bar (Charles H.) ranks among the best in Asia and pulls a real crowd on weekend nights.

Stay here if your week is in Gangnam: the shopping, the K-beauty clinics, the COEX, the major corporate addresses. The Park Hyatt is two minutes from the Samsung tower complex and walking distance to the high-end Gangnam shopping district. Floor-to-ceiling windows in every room, a top-floor pool over the city, direct access to COEX.

The historic-center pick. The Plaza sits across from City Hall, walking distance to Namsan Tower, Myeongdong, and the original old-Seoul shopping districts. Rooms are sleek and modern, many with panoramic views toward Namsan. Easier to skip than the other four unless your trip is specifically central or you have a Sejong-daero calendar.

The Conrad sits inside the IFC tower complex on the Han River. Less central than the Four Seasons or Plaza, less Gangnam-glossy than the Park Hyatt, but the spa is excellent and the rooms are bigger than anything you will find in old Seoul. The lobby bar runs late and pulls a real Yeouido finance crowd on weeknights.
