How To Think About Atolls And Transfers
Seaplane transfers stop at sunset. If you land after 4pm local time, you’re overnighting in Malé before getting to most of the resorts on this list. Factor a Park Hyatt Hadahaa or a night at the Hilton Malé into the itinerary if your arrival is late.
Speedboat transfers from Malé run about $100 to $400 per person and keep operating after dark. Seaplane transfers are $500 to $900 per person one way depending on distance. Both are private-feeling on arrival day. The seaplane view is better.
Atolls closer to Malé (North and South Malé) are easier logistics. Noonu, Baa, and Raa are farther and require seaplane in every case but deliver the wilder, quieter island experience.
The Ones We Didn’t Rank
The St Regis Vommuli is a solid Marriott Bonvoy redemption and a good resort. It isn’t in the top tier on pure product. Same for the Ritz-Carlton Fari Islands: beautiful design, slightly corporate feel. Conrad Rangali and the original overwater-bar era is showing age and we’d pick nearly anything above it today.
Anantara, Niyama, Velaa, Patina all have their fans and none were close cuts. The criteria for this list is simple: clears a flight cost that buys you two weeks in almost anywhere else in the world.
