Credit card rewards are the single biggest lever most people have on travel spend. Pick the right card, route your everyday spending through it, and the signup bonus alone can cover a round-trip business class seat.

The catch: there are hundreds of travel cards, and the right one depends entirely on how you spend, how you travel, and which points programs you actually want to use. A Chase card that’s perfect for a United flyer is the wrong card for someone who flies American or lives out of Hyatts.

This guide breaks the landscape into the five categories that actually matter and surfaces the current top cards in each. If you want to understand the mechanics first, start with how credit card points work and who transfers to whom.

If you want to skip straight to the shortlists:

What changed in 2024, 2025, and 2026

The travel card market has shifted more in the last 18 months than in the five years before. If you haven’t reviewed your wallet since 2023, a few of these will matter:

  • Chase Sapphire Reserve hit $795 (June 2025 refresh, up from $550). New earning rates: 8x on Chase Travel, 4x on flights and hotels booked direct. New credit stack: $500 The Edit hotel credit, $300 Exclusive Tables dining, $300 StubHub. Worth the fee only if you actually use them.
  • Amex Platinum hit $895 (September 2025 refresh, up from $695). Added Resy, Oura, lululemon, Walmart+ credits. Lounge network unchanged. Business Platinum matched at $895.
  • Citi Strata Elite launched at $595 (July 2025), Citi’s first premium card since Prestige died in 2021. Includes four AA Admirals Club passes, $200 Blacklane credit, and Priority Pass.
  • Capital One Venture X is the value champ at $395, with a $300 travel credit and 10,000-mile anniversary bonus that nets the fee to zero.
  • Bilt Card 2.0 launched February 2026, split into three tiers (Blue $0, Obsidian $95, Palladium $495) and moved from Wells Fargo to Cardless. Rent earning now tiered by spend.
  • Atmos Rewards cards from Bank of America replaced the Alaska Mileage Plan card in 2025 after the Alaska + Hawaiian merger. Ascent is $95, Summit is $395.
  • Airline card fee creep. United Club Infinite hit $695, AA Executive hit $595, and authorized users now cost money on both.

Transfer-side shifts (all documented in our transfer partners guide): Amex devalued Cathay and Emirates to 5:4, American AAdvantage joined Citi at 1:1 (unique), and Etihad is leaving Amex on June 30, 2026.

Travel Rewards Credit Cards

The flagship category. These are the cards with flexible, transferable points (Chase Ultimate Rewards, Amex Membership Rewards, Capital One Miles, Citi ThankYou, Bilt) that give you the most options for how to redeem. Transfer to an airline for business class, book through the card’s travel portal, or use points for a wedding and honeymoon redemption.

The best card in this category depends on which ecosystem you want to live in. Chase is the cleanest lineup (Hyatt, United, Southwest). Amex is deepest on Asia-Pacific and European carriers. Capital One has the widest airline coverage. Bilt earns on rent, which is unmatched.

Airline Miles Credit Cards

Airline co-branded cards make sense if you’re loyal to a specific carrier and fly it enough to use the perks (free checked bag, priority boarding, companion fare, status qualification). They also earn miles you can redeem for partner awards across the whole alliance, not just the issuing airline.

If you’re a United flyer, see our Star Alliance guide for where the miles actually go. If you’re chasing Turkish Miles & Smiles partner awards, our Turkish M&S guide covers the sweet spots. For American flyers, Citi ThankYou is now the only bank currency that transfers to AAdvantage at 1:1.

Hotel Rewards Credit Cards

Hotel co-brands are the easiest way to earn elite status without chasing it. Hilton Aspire gets you Diamond. Marriott Brilliant gets you Platinum. World of Hyatt delivers a free night certificate on anniversary plus a second after $15K of spend, and Hyatt points remain the most valuable hotel currency by a wide margin.

If you’re loyal to one brand, a hotel co-brand almost always pays for itself on the annual free night alone. If you’re brand-agnostic, a flexible travel card (Chase, Amex, Capital One) will serve you better.

Small Business Credit Cards

Business cards are the single best way to accelerate point-earning if you run a business, consult, freelance, or have any side revenue. Most people qualify (sole prop is fine) and the signup bonuses are often double the equivalent personal cards. Chase Ink Preferred at 100K points after $8K is one of the most-recommended starter bonuses in the space.

Two additional perks worth knowing. Business cards generally don’t report to personal credit, so they don’t count against Chase’s 5/24 rule. And Capital One Venture X Business launched in 2024 at $395 with 2x on everything, which is real competition for Amex Business Platinum at less than half the fee.

Premium / Luxury Credit Cards

The premium tier changed more in 2025 than in the previous decade. Sapphire Reserve ($795), Amex Platinum ($895), and Business Platinum ($895) all hiked fees and rebuilt their credit stacks. The math on whether they’re worth it depends entirely on whether you actually use the new credits (Resy, Oura, lululemon on Amex; The Edit hotels and Exclusive Tables on Chase).

If you want premium lounge access and transfer partners without the top-tier fee, Capital One Venture X at $395 is hard to beat. If you’re Citi-adjacent or American-loyal, the new Citi Strata Elite at $595 opens up AA Admirals Club access that used to require the AA Executive card.

Summary & Takeaways

Pick based on how you actually spend, not on which card sounds coolest. A Chase Sapphire Preferred at $95 will serve most people better than a $795 Reserve they won’t fully use.

Most serious award travelers hold at least two currencies, typically Chase plus either Amex, Bilt, or Capital One. No single ecosystem covers every program, and the coverage gaps are what push people to diversify.
