IHG Merlin is the internal employee intranet for every IHG hotel in the world. News, HR, training, corporate updates, brand standards. It is also where IHG employees pull their friends and family rate links, which is the reason anyone outside the company ever types “IHG Merlin” into Google.

The short version: if you know someone who works at an IHG property or at the corporate level, they can generate a rate link that gets you 30 to 50 percent off the flex rate at most IHG brands. If you don’t know anyone, there are a few workarounds that still sometimes function, but they are getting narrower every year as IHG tightens verification.

What IHG Merlin Actually Is

Merlin is the colleague-facing side of IHG. It is not a consumer tool. Employees log in to get paystubs, complete training, read corporate announcements, and manage their benefits. Two of those benefits are the reason outsiders care: the IHG Employee Rate and the IHG Friends and Family Rate.

IHG employees access Merlin at merlin.ihg.com. If you don’t have a Merlin login, you are not going to get one. IHG uses a single-sign-on system tied to employment, and accounts deactivate when people leave the company. The secondary market for Merlin logins that used to exist on forums is mostly dead.

How The Rates Work

IHG has two employee booking tiers.

  • Employee Rate: deeper discount, restricted to the employee and their immediate household. Subject to blackout dates and brand caps.
  • Friends and Family Rate: shallower discount than the employee rate but the one that matters for most readers. Roughly 30 to 50 percent off the best flex rate, depending on the property and season. Can be booked for anyone the employee shares the link with.

The F&F rate is not advertised as a fixed percentage. It is a rate that IHG releases to employees on a per-property basis, and luxury properties (InterContinental, Kimpton, Regent) tend to be steeper discounts on paper but harder to book at peak. Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, and Crowne Plaza are where F&F rates tend to look most absurd, sometimes 60 percent off.

Getting A Rate Link

The booking flow is link-based. An IHG employee logs into Merlin, navigates to the F&F section, and generates a URL specific to their employee ID. They send that link to you. You click it, it opens a branded IHG booking page showing the discounted rate, you book, and you print a voucher that includes the employee’s name.

An example of what a live F&F link looks like is here. You’ll see the rate is visible without authentication, which is the loophole people try to exploit.

The Google Search Workaround, Honestly

Some IHG employees have, over the years, posted their F&F links publicly. A basic Google search for “IHG friends and family” plus variations turns up a handful. A few dedicated travel forums maintain lists. The rates visible on those links are real.

What isn’t real is the idea that you can just book at one of these rates and walk in. The voucher requires the sponsoring employee’s full name. At check-in, most full-service IHG properties will ask for that name and compare against the voucher. A small but growing number of properties will also ask for the sponsor’s employee ID, which you don’t have.

The hit rate from my reading of trip reports across IHG brands:

  • Holiday Inn Express, Holiday Inn, avid, Candlewood, Staybridge: ID checks are rare. A printed voucher usually clears.
  • Crowne Plaza, Hotel Indigo, EVEN: mixed. Some front desks verify, some don’t.
  • InterContinental, Kimpton, Regent, Six Senses: verification is more common at check-in, especially in the US and Europe. Bookings can also get flagged and canceled before arrival if the rate looks off.

A canceled reservation is the worst outcome because it often happens 24 to 72 hours before arrival, which is exactly when you have no replacement options at a normal price.

What Actually Books Reliably

If you want an IHG discount without the cancellation risk, the F&F route is the wrong one unless you know the employee personally and they are willing to be named on the booking. In that case it is excellent. Otherwise, the more stable discounts at IHG are:

  • Corporate codes, if your employer has one. Check the IHG corporate codes list. Typical range 10 to 20 percent, but no voucher, no sponsor name, no ID check.
  • IHG One Rewards member rates. Small discount (5 to 10 percent) but stackable with promotions and earns points.
  • AAA and AARP rates. Usually 5 to 10 percent, occasionally matches or beats the corporate rate, and checks are minimal (a card at check-in for AAA, rarely anything for AARP).
  • Advance purchase. The non-refundable rate at most IHG brands is 15 to 20 percent below flex and often beats corporate. If you are sure of your dates, this is the math that usually wins.

If You Do Know An IHG Employee

Ask for the F&F link directly. IHG employees get a capped number of F&F room nights per year, so be respectful about what you’re asking for. A three-night stay at a Holiday Inn Express is a small ask; a week at an InterContinental in high season is a big one.

The employee’s name goes on the voucher. Most IHG F&F terms require the employee or a direct family member to be part of the trip, but enforcement varies by brand and region. Ask the employee what they are comfortable with before you book.

If You Don’t

Skip Merlin. The public-link workaround used to be reliable and isn’t anymore. Start with corporate codes if you have one, then compare to AAA/AARP and advance purchase. At the luxury end, IHG’s own Ambassador program (InterContinental) and Inner Circle (Six Senses/Regent) often unlock breakfast, upgrades, and fourth-night-free deals that end up cheaper than a risky F&F booking that might get canceled.
